Inspiring Young Donor Encourages Others to Make a Life-Saving Difference

In a heartwarming tale of compassion and civic duty, 20-year-old Tiernan from Omagh is advocating for others to join the stem cell donor register after his own life-changing experience in potentially saving a life. Tiernan's journey into stem cell donation began in 2022, sparked by a school assembly and a deeply personal connection, as his uncle had previously fought against kidney cancer.

The Call That Changed Everything

The transformative moment arrived when Tiernan received an unexpected call from DKMS informing him he was a match for a patient in need. “I’d actually forgotten I registered,” he shared, reflecting on the surprise that quickly turned to joy. “I thought it was amazing – so did my family and friends.” Touched by the possibility of making such a profound difference, Tiernan proceeded with the donation process, which he described as straightforward and well-organized.

A Seamless Experience

Regarding his experience, Tiernan remarked that the donation took less time than anticipated, lasting only about two and a half hours. “Even the nurses were surprised – they were like, ‘Are you done already?’” he recounted with a smile. The genuine support from friends and family bolstered his spirits, with colleagues expressing admiration for his decision and the ripple effect it created among them. “People at work kept coming up to me saying how amazing it was and that I’d inspired them,” he noted.

Encouragement to Others

Learning more about the patient for whom he donated truly made the experience resonate. “They’re the same age as my mum,” he said, bringing a personal touch to the importance of donation. Tiernan emphasized that joining the stem cell register is simple and can profoundly affect someone's life, urging others to consider making the commitment. “Overall, it was just a great experience,” he concluded, embodying the spirit of altruism that so many individuals aspire to achieve.
