Inspiring Voices: Students Celebrate Community Heroes Through Empowering Lectures
A new initiative at De Montfort University (DMU) Leicester is shining a spotlight on local heroes who are making a significant impact in the community. As part of the enchanting series of guest lectures titled "Voices of the City," students are set to engage with inspiring community advocates and charity leaders who have changed lives across Leicester.
A Platform for Change
This enlightening series is managed by students studying on DMU's Foundation Degree in Tourism and Event Management at Leicester College. Hosted in the welcoming Heritage House, the three-part event series is backed by the university’s United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals Hub. All events are free and open to the public, ensuring that the community can benefit from the wisdom of these inspirational speakers.
Student Involvement
Radostina Gininska, a student team leader from Leicester College, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the importance of highlighting the stories that shape Leicester. “Being involved in planning, inviting guest speakers, and promoting the event has given me a real insight into how events come together,” she noted. Her excitement reflects the broader theme of the project: empowering young people to connect, learn, and take action within their communities.
Educational Impact
Dr Hiu Man Chan, a Senior Lecturer at DMU, stated, “Leicester is a city with a lot of potential, and the future lies with the young people.” His commitment to guiding students through this journey creates fertile ground for personal and community growth. The project not only enhances the educational experience for students but also encourages them to shape their own culture and contribute positively to their environment.
Future Events
The upcoming events on May 7 and 14 promise to explore how sports influence identity and community, and strategies to create safer environments against violence. These discussions will continue to amplify the voices of those who are making a difference. Bookings can be made through Skiddle, and participants can follow the evolving narrative on the Voices of the City Instagram page.
This initiative is an excellent opportunity for students and community members alike to engage with pressing local issues while celebrating the power of collaboration and advocacy. As the series unfolds, it is clear that "Voices of the City" is more than just a lecture series; it is a movement towards greater community involvement and awareness.
