A remarkable environmental initiative in India has transformed the once plastic-choked Buckingham Canal into a thriving mangrove ecosystem. Over 600 paid volunteers united to breathe new life into the Buckingham Canal in the Cuddalore district. Spanning a length of 494 miles, this freshwater canal was vital for irrigation and trade during British rule, yet it faced immense degradation from pollution and invasive species. The clean-up process involved the removal of 750 kilograms of trash and numerous invasive plants, showcasing the community's commitment to restoring their waterway.

As part of the restoration efforts, 20,000 mangrove seedlings were planted along a 1.8-mile stretch of the canal.
