Inspiring Teacher Creates Uplifting Heritage Tours to Engage Local Community

Alasdair Bright, a dedicated history teacher from St Cuthbert's Catholic Primary School in Kenton, has gained recognition for his impactful heritage walking tours that celebrate the local community's history. Selected as the North East winner in the inaugural Inspiring History Teacher Awards, Bright's efforts to engage students and locals alike have transcended language barriers, with his tours being translated into over 20 languages.

A Unique Approach to Local History

Bright's innovative tours have sparked significant interest among the community, reflecting the rich heritage of Newcastle. His commitment to inclusivity is evident in the diverse languages of the local families that have helped translate the material. “When we first started the project, we were unsure if there’d be a huge amount in the area, but listening to locals revealed a rich history right on our doorstep,” Bright stated. This sentiment emphasizes his passion for uncovering stories that resonate with those around him.

Empowering Future Generations

For the past four years, Alasdair has spearheaded the pupil leadership group ‘Heritage Heroes’, encouraging children to engage with their local history. The program not only empowers students to research Newcastle's past but also fosters a sense of identity and belonging. “It helps children get a sense of where they’re from and grow their roots," he remarked, reinforcing the idea that heritage is critical for personal development.

Community Engagement Through Education

Bright's commitment to education extends beyond traditional teaching methods. He has integrated local archives into the curriculum and established partnerships with local institutions such as the City Library. The tours, designed to be led by the Heritage Heroes, not only aim to educate but also assist refugee and asylum families in understanding their new surroundings. By doing so, Bright is cultivating an inclusive environment where all community members can feel at home.

A Vision for the Future

With plans to construct a museum within the school and an archaeological dig on-site, Alasdair’s initiatives exemplify visionary leadership in education. As one of only 13 Champion Heritage Schools in the UK, St Cuthbert's serves as a model for how schools can engage with history dynamically and meaningfully. Bright's philosophy is clear: “It’s a massive privilege to work with the children and give them the skills to navigate their lives.”

As Alasdair Bright continues to inspire both his students and the broader community, his work reflects the vital role that educators play in connecting generations through history, fostering a deeper understanding of one's heritage, and encouraging a spirit of inclusivity and curiosity.
