Inspiring Student Initiative: “Voices of the City” Celebrates Community Heroes

De Montfort University (DMU) in Leicester is amplifying the voices of community heroes through a series of guest lectures titled “Voices of the City.” This innovative initiative, managed by students studying for a Foundation Degree in Tourism and Event Management, offers a platform for community advocates, charity leaders, and individuals making a significant impact in Leicester.

Highlighting Local Heroes

As part of this enlightening series, community figures will share their stories with students, fostering a connection between the university and the local area. Lois Mayor from Women’s Aid Leicestershire Limited will focus on the experiences of women in Leicester, underscoring the impact of gender-related challenges and solutions within the community.

Student Engagement and Experience

Radostina Gininska, the student team leader from Leicester College, expressed her enthusiasm: “I’m excited to be part of the ‘Voices of the City’ project, which highlights the people and stories shaping Leicester.” Her involvement has provided her with valuable insights into event planning and promotion, and she looks forward to witnessing the project’s positive impact on the community.

A Vision for the Future

Initiated by Dr. Hiu Man Chan, a Senior Lecturer in Creative Industries at DMU, this project aims to inspire students to actively engage in community action while gaining real-world experience. Dr. Chan emphasized Leicester's potential, stating, “Voices of the City gives them an opportunity to make and shape their own culture via their own events.” This forward-thinking approach nurtures the next generation of change-makers.

Upcoming Events and Community Connection

The series continues with two remaining events scheduled for May 7 and May 14, focusing on how sport influences identity and community, and addressing strategies to create safer environments. These events are free and open to the public, further bridging the gap between the university and the local community. Bookings for these insightful discussions can be made through Skiddle, with more information available on the Voices of the City Instagram page.

By fostering these interactions and celebrating local heroes, DMU is not just educating students; it is cultivating a vibrant community spirit and empowering young people to take ownership of their cultural narratives.
