Inspiring Stories Unite Thousands at Brighton Marathon Weekend
This year’s Brighton Marathon weekend is set to be a celebration of determination, resilience, and collective spirit, with over 20,000 participants coming together for a series of inspiring races. Taking place from April 11 to 12, the event will not only feature the full marathon but also a new trail marathon, a 10K race, and various family-friendly one-mile runs.
Heartfelt Reasons to Run
Among the thousands of runners is Dr. Rob Galloway, a Brighton-based physician who is running to support Rare People – The Research Charity. This cause resonates deeply with him, as he and his wife founded the charity following their daughter Frankie’s diagnosis with the ultra-rare DeSanto-Shinawi Syndrome. In an emotional display of love and determination, Rob plans to push Frankie in her buggy for the final 5K, crossing the finish line together.
Remarkable Achievements
Another extraordinary story comes from ultrarunner Hannah Cox, whose participation in this marathon marks her 99th. Having run 75 marathons and 23 ultramarathons across India, all while managing serious health issues, Hannah's story is a testament to what one can achieve against the odds. Her goal is to raise £1 million for environmental causes through her wider initiative, “Project Salt Run.”
A True Community Spirit
Also participating is Nuala Smyth from Littlehampton, who will celebrate her 228th marathon. Remarkably, she has run every Brighton Marathon since it began in 2010. Despite being diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer this year, Nuala's passion for running remains unwavering, and she continues to inspire others by integrating her personal battle into her running journey.
Running for Meaningful Causes
Many runners, including Sara Kilduff and Lora Christy, are driven by personal stories that connect them to larger causes, such as the Multiple Sclerosis Society and Marie Curie. This year’s race is especially poignant for Lora, as it falls on what would have been her father's 80th birthday, making her run in his memory even more meaningful.
A Collective Celebration
With more than 3,000 marathon runners and 500 10K participants fundraising for various charities, this weekend promises to be a significant demonstration of community support in Sussex and beyond. Organizers are expecting a vibrant festival atmosphere, showcasing not just athletic prowess but also the enduring power of personal stories and community spirit.
