Inspiring Resilience: The Shine of Young Heroes at the 2026 SEND Awards

The spotlight was firmly on young individuals with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) as they took the helm of the 2026 SEND Awards. This year’s ceremony brought to light exceptional stories shaped by the resilience and determination of these young people, proving their capability to thrive in the face of challenges.

A Celebration of Achievement

On April 23, members of the Young People’s Advisory Group (YPAG) convened at Blundell Park to review an impressive 407 nominations from the community. Each nomination showcased powerful narratives reflecting resilience, enthusiasm, and positive attitudes. These young individuals continue to demonstrate remarkable strength, effectively dispelling any notions of limitation associated with their special educational needs.

Voices of the Community

Parents and community members provided feedback that illustrated not only personal growth but also the supportive environment cultivated by various organizations. One heartfelt nomination read, “They prove every day that determination can overcome even the greatest challenges.” This sentiment underscores the incredible accomplishments of these young people and their capacity to inspire others.

Making a Meaningful Impact

The YPAG, which serves as an engagement and advocacy group for young people with additional needs, played a crucial role in selecting the award recipients. Their hands-on approach ensured that the winners truly represented the voices of those who have lived experience. Ann-Marie Matson, Director of Children’s Services at North East Lincolnshire Council, emphasized the significance of this perspective in ensuring that the awards resonate with authenticity and heart.

Looking Forward

As the award winners are set to be contacted and celebrated at the Grimsby Town Hall on June 18, anticipation builds for an event that is not just about acknowledgment, but also about fostering a community of support and inspiration. This year’s SEND Awards stand as a testament to the power of inclusion and the extraordinary potential within every young individual.
