Retta spent years as a captive bear, confined to a tiny cage in a tourist resort, where she was both a sad spectacle and the victim of neglect. Her existence was limited to a small concrete space, devoid of the freedom to roam, play, or even feel the warmth of the earth beneath her paws. This story begins with tragedy, but it paves the way for a narrative filled with hope.
A Daring Rescue
In 2024, IAR and the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC) launched an ambitious rescue mission to liberate Retta. The teams worked tirelessly with local authorities, overcoming various logistical challenges to ensure her safe transport to a sanctuary where she could experience the life she deserved. Thanks to their dedication, Retta can now roam freely, discovering the joys of her newfound freedom.
A New Chapter for Retta
Two years after her rescue, Retta is thriving in the bear sanctuary operated by IAR and FPWC. She enjoys a life filled with care, where she can reconnect with her natural instincts and rediscover the joy she had long been denied. Alan Knight OBE, President of International Animal Rescue, expressed the profound impact of her transformation: "Seeing her rediscover her instincts and joy makes the monumental effort we put into rescuing her all worth it."
