In a heartwarming initiative, a Derby couple is making a profound impact on the lives of dementia patients through their creative enterprise, HOBO Designs. Arjun Pren and Adithya Lakshmi KR relocated to the UK from India to study fine arts, and they have since dedicated their talents to a project that not only beautifies care homes but also enriches the mental well-being of their residents.
Bringing Life to Care Homes
The duo's project, "Living in Memories," focuses on painting murals that depict significant moments from the residents' lives. By transforming the often sterile environment of care homes into vibrant spaces filled with personal memories, they aim to enhance the residents' quality of life. Arjun remarked, "When you walk into a care home, it feels almost like a hospital... What if they had to live in a place like this, with no colours and no memories?" This question drove them to create a more nurturing atmosphere.
Heartfelt Reactions and Renewed Connections
Through their collaborative approach, Arjun and Adithya engage with the families of the residents, gathering rich stories and old photographs that inspire their murals. The emotional responses from the residents when viewing their personalized murals have been incredibly gratifying. According to Arjun, it was not uncommon for residents to remember significant aspects of their past, often leading to tears of joy and heartfelt embraces. "The best part was when they saw their rooms for the first time," he shared, highlighting the emotional impact of their work.
A Lasting Legacy
The project has not only brought happiness to the residents but has also deepened familial connections. In one poignant case, the family of a former Preston FC player purchased a mural that depicted his life in football. The son's emotional reaction underscored the power of art to facilitate remembrance and celebration of past achievements. Arjun believes, "Even if they saw it once, it would be worth it; their memories returning and them being able to relive the best parts of their life is something we owe to our grandparents."
Expanding Horizons
Having successfully implemented the project in three care homes, Arjun and Adithya are now eager to extend their mission. They are inviting other care homes in Derby to collaborate, aiming to enhance the lives of more residents through art. "The positive impact on their mental health is tremendous. It brings so much happiness to everyone involved," they expressed.
