Inspiring Journey: Elgin Teacher Runs for Sensory Loss Charity to Empower Her Son

In a heartfelt commitment to support children with sensory loss, Bri Wignall, a teacher at Elgin Academy, is taking on the challenge of running the Speyside Way 100k. This endeavor aims to raise funds for North East Sensory Services (NESS), a charity that has significantly impacted her young son Ruairidh's life, providing him with essential support and friendship.

A Personal Mission

Ruairidh, who is set to begin his schooling at Mosstowie Primary School, has faced challenges related to his sight loss. With the support of NESS, he has not only found a sense of belonging but has also learned that being different is completely acceptable. Bri's fundraising goal of £1,000 reflects her deep appreciation for the charity's efforts, having already surpassed her initial target of £500.

Impact of NESS on Young Lives

Since joining NESS’s Young People’s Sensory Service (YPSS), Ruairidh has experienced life-changing support, attending clubs and engaging in various activities that help him build friendships and confidence. The sense of community formed at NESS has allowed him to connect with peers who understand his experiences, providing him with role models and instilling a sense of hope and belonging.

A Journey of Self-Acceptance

Bri described a touching moment when Ruairidh recognized others like him at NESS. “Oh, they're like me. I have friends now,” he said, marking a pivotal moment in his journey. This acceptance not only helps him navigate his challenges but also encourages him to thrive socially as he prepares to transition into primary school.

Dedication to a Cause

Bri's determination to run for NESS is fueled by her firsthand observations of how the charity assists children who feel isolated. Her extensive experience in running ultras reflects her proactive approach to making a difference. Having participated in various endurance challenges, she is steadfast in her resolve to support NESS, a charity that empowers those with sensory loss to lead fulfilling, independent lives.

The fundraising efforts are crucial not only for Ruairidh but also for countless other children facing similar challenges. By participating in this event, Bri aims to shed light on the importance of community support for families navigating the complexities of sensory impairment. Her inspiring journey reiterates the immense power of kindness and understanding in enabling young people to flourish.
