Inspiring Future Artists: A New Initiative at the University of Reading
The University of Reading is making strides towards inclusivity and creativity by appointing Anurita Chandola as their new Artist in Residence. This initiative aims to make art more accessible to underrepresented students at a local school, promoting exploration and appreciation of the arts.
Empowering Young Minds through Art
Anurita Chandola, an artist known for her work exploring space travel and imagined futures, will engage with pupils at Maiden Erlegh School in Reading over the next three years. Funded by the Group for Education in Museums (GEM) and the Worshipful Company of Art Scholars, this residency focuses on the theme of ‘drawing diversity’ and addresses the gaps in representation within the University’s historic drawings collection.
Workshops That Foster Creativity
The workshops are designed to unlock the students' observational and critical thinking skills, providing them with the tools to appreciate art from a fresh perspective. Anurita emphasizes the importance of seeing creative careers as attainable goals, especially for pupils who may not have considered such pathways before.
A Platform for Expression
In the final year of the residency, students will get the unique opportunity to curate an exhibition of their own artwork, inspired by the University’s collection. This hands-on experience not only nurtures their artistic talents but also cultivates a sense of ownership and pride in their creative expressions.
As Dannielle Keegel, Widening Participation Project Officer at the University, reflects, this project is crucial in bridging the diversity gap in the arts sector, ensuring that students from all backgrounds have the chance to engage with historical art narratives.
This initiative represents a significant step towards fostering a more inclusive art community, empowering the next generation of creatives, and enriching the cultural landscape of Reading. Through the visionary work of Anurita Chandola and the collaborative effort of the University, students are sure to embark on a transformative journey in the world of art.
