Inspiring Community Spirit Shines in Barking and Dagenham
Barking and Dagenham Council recently held a vibrant celebration for Volunteers' Week, highlighting the incredible contributions of local volunteers who have dedicated their time to uplift the community. This special event, which took place on June 2, served as a heartfelt thank you to 364 active volunteers who collectively contributed over 20,500 hours of service in the borough over the past year.
Celebrating Dedication and Impact
The celebration brought together volunteers and community leaders, where attendees were inspired by personal stories from volunteers like Nur Alam and Afsana Hashmi. Their narratives shed light on the significant impact that volunteering has not only on their lives but also on the lives of vulnerable residents and local services in Barking and Dagenham.
Recognizing Outstanding Volunteers
A key highlight of the event was the recognition of exceptional volunteers with the 'Star of the Year' awards. Notably, John Bangura received the 'Volunteer of the Year Award' for his remarkable achievement of volunteering 900 hours as a Digital Champion during the past year. He also supports the Barking Community Hub as a Library assistant, exemplifying the dedication and selflessness that define the local volunteer spirit.
A Message of Gratitude
Councillor Saima Ashraf, the Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Community, Business and Engagement, emphasized the vital role that volunteers play in creating a supportive environment within Barking and Dagenham. She remarked, “Our volunteers are at the heart of so much that makes Barking and Dagenham a great place to live.” This celebration served as not only a recognition of their hard work but also an encouragement for more residents to get involved in volunteering efforts.
