Inspirational Teacher's Heritage Tours Celebrate Community and Culture

In an inspiring turn of events, Alasdair Bright, a history teacher at St Cuthbert's Catholic Primary School in Kenton, has garnered national recognition for his innovative heritage walking tours of Newcastle. Selected as the North East winner in the inaugural Inspiring History Teacher Awards, Bright is one of ten entrants chosen from thousands of nominations across the UK. This award celebrates teachers who make history engaging, inclusive, and meaningful, a mission that aligns perfectly with Bright's dedication to showcasing local heritage.

Bridging Cultures Through History

Bright's walking tours, which delve into Newcastle's rich historical tapestry, have been translated into over 20 languages, promoting inclusivity within the diverse school community. His work not only highlights the unique stories of the area but also invites families and locals to participate and share their own narratives. Bright emphasized the importance of making history accessible, stating, "We’ve tried to make it really inclusive - 20 languages people speak in our school community because we try to remove barriers."

Empowering Future Generations

The initiative has sparked significant interest and engagement among students, particularly through the school's pupil leadership group, 'Heritage Heroes'. These young leaders are empowered to explore and research their local history, further strengthening their connection to the community. "Every year children apply as they are passionate about learning about our local heritage," Bright shared. Their findings not only enrich their education but also foster a profound sense of identity among the students.

A Commitment to Growth and Inclusion

Bright's vision extends beyond merely teaching history; it encompasses fostering a sense of belonging, particularly for families new to the area. His remarks highlight the impact of understanding one's roots: "It helps children get a sense of where they're from and grow the roots." This commitment to inclusivity positions the school as a beacon for various community members, including refugee and asylum families.

A Bright Future Ahead

Looking forward, Bright has ambitious plans, including the development of a museum within the school and an archaeological dig on-site, aiming to deepen students’ engagement with their heritage. His recognition as a leading educator serves as a testament to the collaborative effort at St Cuthbert’s, where dedication to education is palpable. Alasdair Bright embodies what it means to be an inspiring teacher—one who connects students with their past to illuminate their future.
