Innovative Program Empowers Youth with Digital Skills and Wins National Award

The Bradford Digital Creatives programme has been recognized at the Museums + Heritage Awards 2026, securing the award for Best Use of Digital (UK). This initiative, hosted by the renowned National Science and Media Museum in Bradford, celebrates the triumphs of young people engaging with creative digital skills.

Inspiring Success Stories

Head of screen and cultural engagement at the museum, Sally Folkard, highlighted the remarkable outcomes of the program. Among the inspiring stories is that of a 14-year-old who became a finalist in the BAFTA Young Game Designers competition after participating in a workshop. Additionally, a local school initiated a student-led Games Design Club, showcasing the impact of hands-on creative experiences.

Building Confidence and Creativity

The Bradford Digital Creatives project, supported by Arts Council England and Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, has positively influenced over 3,000 students across 10 schools that traditionally engaged less with the arts. Collaborating with professional artists, students have delved into various digital disciplines, including 360° filmmaking, soundscape recording, light art, virtual reality, and games design, creating digital artwork that has been showcased in local exhibitions.

Strengthening Community Bonds

Folkard emphasized the project's powerful mutual exchange, stating that it fostered confidence and strengthened relationships between educational institutions and cultural organizations. This enduring partnership creates lasting benefits for both students and artists alike, breathing new life into creative practices.

A Bright Future Ahead

The recognition of the Bradford Digital Creatives programme at the Museums + Heritage Awards reflects a growing trend towards the integration of creative digital skills in education. As organizations like the National Science and Media Museum shine a light on young talent, it sets a precedent for future initiatives designed to inspire and equip the next generation.
