Iconic Photograph of Music Legends Captivates Southend Audiences

A remarkable photograph capturing the essence of South Essex's vibrant music scene is now on display at the Beecroft Gallery, inviting visitors to revel in a moment of artistic history. The image features over 50 notable musicians from Southend, Canvey, and Basildon who came together for a unique gathering at the Palace Theatre in Westcliff.
A Gathering of Music Legends
This once-in-a-lifetime photograph includes well-known artists such as Paul Shuttleworth, Will Birch, and Vic Collins from The Kursaal Flyers, alongside original Dr Feelgood bassist John B Sparks and band manager Chris Fenwick. The portrait also pays homage to musicians linked with influential bands like Depeche Mode and The Cure, as well as collaborations with iconic artists such as Eric Clapton.
The Vision Behind the Photo
The ambitious initiative was organized by local musician Mark "Snowboy" Cotgrove, who was determined to unite these music legends for a historic snapshot. Carl Allen, from Big Wave PR, skillfully captured the moment, expressing his excitement over being part of this significant event. “It was an incredible honour to be the photographer for the project,” Mr. Allen said, highlighting the excitement and camaraderie among the artists during the shoot.
Adding Value to the Exhibition
Following the photo session, Allen donated the framed photograph to the Beecroft Gallery, where it will be displayed until the conclusion of the "Scene by the Sea" exhibition on October 26. Charles Sharman-Cox, curator of the exhibit, expressed his delight upon learning about the donation, noting the phenomenal visitor numbers it has attracted. “This photograph will be a wonderful addition to the show, giving people another reason to visit or revisit before it ends,” he stated.
This exhibition not only showcases artistic talent but also highlights the rich musical heritage of the region, reminding us of the powerful unity that music brings to communities. Visitors are encouraged to stop by the Beecroft Gallery before the exhibition concludes, to witness this celebration of music and culture that embodies the spirit of South Essex.
