Hull’s Beats Bus Recognized as a Changemaker, Inspiring Change Unlike Ever Before
The Beats Bus, an initiative in Hull committed to using hip-hop as a means to combat poverty and protect youth from gang influences, has earned a prestigious spot on the Big Issue's list of 100 “Changemakers.” This recognition highlights individuals and groups making significant positive impacts in society.
A Resilient Comeback
After experiencing a heartbreaking loss of their beloved bus in 2024, the community rallied around the Beats Bus through crowdfunding efforts. Thanks to generous support from donors and partners like Big Issue Invest, a new vehicle is now on the road, enabling the continuation of their essential work. Steve Arnott, the founder of Beats Bus, expressed how the challenges they faced presented an opportunity to reimagine their vehicle and enhance their outreach.
Empowering Local Youth
The ongoing efforts of the Beats Bus are making tangible differences in the lives of many young people in Hull. Arnott’s commitment to steering youth towards safer paths has made him an inspiring figure in the community, one whose positivity is deemed "infectious" by those around him. The support from the Big Issue only amplifies this effect, as it provides strategic guidance to amplify their impact.
A Bright Future Ahead
This year’s Changemakers list will also grant access to advice and mentoring from business leaders at Wates, Big Issue's official partner. This collaboration aims to increase the social and environmental impact of Changemakers by offering valuable resources and networking opportunities. Russell Blackman, the managing director of Big Issue, expressed enthusiasm for this new level of support that will help these organizations achieve even more.
The Big Issue has been a beacon of hope for 35 years, renewing its mission to uplift marginalized voices and facilitate community change. With initiatives like those of the Beats Bus, the positive momentum continues, demonstrating that with resilience and community support, impactful transformations are possible.
