Founded in 2014 by Greg Sanderson, Smart School Councils (SSC) is a charity aimed at transforming how students engage with democracy in their schools. The program provides schools with a platform that allows pupils to partake in discussions, voice their concerns, and suggest meaningful improvements to their educational environment, thereby making democratic practices a reality rather than a distant concept.
Real Change Through Student Engagement
At Halling Primary School in Kent, children have taken the lead in implementing creative solutions such as establishing "buddy benches" for lonely students and revamping the playground. This proactive approach not only enhances the school’s atmosphere but instills a sense of responsibility and leadership among young participants. Jess, a nine-year-old student, proudly describes her role as suggestion box leader, illustrating that children are capable of contributing significantly when given the tools and opportunities.
Positive Outcomes for Students and Teachers
The SSC program has been widely embraced, with approximately 750 schools now involved, most of which report significant improvement in student engagement. 90% of participating pupils feel they are listened to, a drastic increase from previous measures. Teachers, too, have noted enhancements in students' listening and speaking skills, facilitating more productive discussions and promoting a respectful school culture.
The Road Ahead: Challenges and Support
Despite its successes, the initiative faces financial hurdles as it seeks to expand its reach. Many schools struggle with budgeting for such programs; however, influential supporters like musician Brian Eno commend SSC’s mission to empower children through meaningful engagement.
