How a Zoo Partnership is Bringing Joy to Hospitalized Children Worldwide
In a heartwarming initiative, the San Diego Zoo has partnered with hospitals to bring the joy of wildlife directly to children who are unable to visit the zoo due to health reasons. Through the Wildlife Explorers Channel, a 24/7 streaming service, young patients can experience the sights and sounds of the zoo from their hospital beds.
Bridging the Gap Between Health and Happiness
This innovative approach began locally at Rady Children’s Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego, but it has quickly expanded to a global network. The channel now reaches over 400 hospitals and medical facilities across 48 states and 12 countries, providing an estimated 25 million views annually.
A Sense of Connection and Learning
The Wildlife Explorers Channel not only features footage of animals from around the world, but also includes presentations by zoo staff, live 24/7 cameras in animal enclosures, and tailored educational content. This programming is particularly important for patients with weakened immune systems who cannot enjoy outings like a normal trip to the zoo.
Making a Difference One Patient at a Time
Margaret Fitzgerald, Manager of the Hematology and Oncology Unit at Rady Children’s Hospital, shared the profound impact the channel has had on young patients. She recounted a touching moment when a three-year-old girl, feeling sad about her mom's departure for work, brightened up instantly when the zoo channel was turned on. This kind of engagement offers comfort and joy in challenging times.
Expanding Access Globally
Notably, the program’s reach is expanding. In 2023, tablets preloaded with the channel’s content were delivered to a children’s hospital and school in Ukraine, allowing children facing difficult circumstances to experience the wonder of wildlife education and entertainment from afar.
This initiative showcases the power of creative partnerships in improving the well-being of children around the world. By leveraging technology and nurturing connections with nature, the San Diego Zoo is making a significant difference in the lives of those who need it most.
