How a Support Group is Transforming Men's Mental Health in Newark
A newly established support group in Newark is making significant strides in breaking down the barriers surrounding men's mental health. Mankind, founded by Jordan Bishop, is celebrating its first anniversary this summer. With a mission to encourage men to express their feelings openly, the group has quickly expanded, demonstrating a crucial shift in addressing mental health issues among men.
Growth and Community
Launched in response to alarming rates of male suicide and deteriorating mental health, Mankind provides a safe haven for men of all ages and backgrounds. Initially attracting just five participants, the group has now grown to 26 active members. Bishop emphasizes the importance of creating a supportive environment where men can share their stories without judgment. This brotherhood has proven vital, particularly for those like Neil Ford, who faced severe mental health challenges before finding solace in the group.
Changing the Narrative
Bishop has introduced a new phrase, “Mental strength is the new mental health,” aiming to reshape how society views men's emotional struggles. He seeks to empower men to find positivity in vulnerability, highlighting that no one has to fight their battles alone. The camaraderie fostered within Mankind not only aids in individually addressing mental health crises but also cultivates a sense of belonging among members.
Expanding Horizons
The future is bright for Mankind, with aspirations to increase meeting frequency and eventually serve as a model for similar groups across the UK. Eysham Pickering, owner of Epic Golden Gloves gym where the sessions take place, acknowledges the transformative impact of the initiative, describing it as a privilege to witness the positive changes in participants’ lives.
Join the Movement
A special anniversary session is scheduled for June 23, inviting all to join in the celebration of this vital cause. Jordan Bishop is also reaching out to potential sponsors to further enhance support for mental health trips, ensuring the group continues to make a difference in the lives of men facing mental health challenges.
Mankind represents a beacon of hope for many, demonstrating that with the right support and community, recovery and growth are indeed possible.
