Historic Alexandria Receives Grant to Celebrate Chocolate's Rich Heritage

In a sweet turn of events, Historic Alexandria has been awarded the prestigious Forrest E. Mars Jr. Chocolate History Grant, a part of the Heritage Chocolate Society's initiative to promote understanding of chocolate's role in American history and culture. This recognition, announced on February 20, 2026, during the society's annual gathering, underscores the city's ongoing commitment to historical education and cultural programming.

Empowering Education Through Chocolate

The Heritage Chocolate Society has a remarkable mission: to support research and educational programming at historic sites, museums, and educational institutions. With nearly $700,000 awarded since the program's inception in 2013, it has facilitated 69 grant projects across 36 organizations in North America. Historic Alexandria's grant will specifically fund a chocolate demonstration at the upcoming Sails on the Potomac Festival, scheduled for June 12-14, 2026, providing an exceptional opportunity for visitors to engage with history through hands-on experiences.

A Celebration of Alexandria's History

Liz Williams, Deputy Director of the Office of Historic Alexandria, highlighted the importance of this funding. The chocolate demonstration will serve as a dynamic focal point in the “250th History Village,” which will feature local history museums and significant historical vessels. By showcasing the rich history of chocolate, this event will enhance public understanding of Alexandria’s role as a port city and its connections to global trade in the 18th century.

Chocolate as a Cultural Connector

Historian Dave Borghesani emphasizes that chocolate has been a cultural connector for over 3,500 years, linking people, traditions, and stories. The exploration of chocolate not only reveals culinary practices but also the social dynamics of its time. In Alexandria, chocolate's narrative can shed light on the roles of race, gender, and social class during the 18th century, illustrating the complexities of human interaction in the past.

Looking Ahead: Chocolate's Future

As Alexandria prepares for this celebration, the upcoming demonstration is more than just a feast for the senses; it is an invitation to explore the layers of history that chocolate represents. From its medicinal uses in the 18th century to its place in social gatherings, chocolate continues to inspire curiosity and connection among people today. The Heritage Chocolate Society's initiative is a positive step forward in historical preservation and education, reminding us of the sweetness that history can bring to our lives.
