Heroic Volunteers Shine at Isle of Wight Community Awards
In a heartwarming celebration of community spirit, volunteers from Age UK Isle of Wight received top honors at the Vectis Radio Isle of Wight Community Awards on March 27, 2026. This year's event was a testament to the selflessness and dedication of individuals who work tirelessly to uplift those around them.
Turning Compassion into Action
Two remarkable volunteers, Cheryl Burtwell and Janet and John Stickland, were recognized for their extraordinary contributions. Cheryl, who won gold in the Good Neighbour category, continues to support older Islanders through the Good Neighbour Scheme, helping those in need enjoy social interactions and maintain a sense of normalcy.
Cheryl's dedication is evident as she assists clients five days a week, accompanying them on outings, and providing crucial support for those recently discharged from the hospital. Her warm and patient approach creates a welcoming environment, allowing her clients to overcome anxieties and enjoy life outside their homes.
Community Champions
Janet and John Stickland, awarded silver for Volunteer of the Year, embody a true partnership in volunteering. They thoughtfully navigate the challenges faced by older adults, ensuring they can participate in community activities. Their commitment shines in their decision to continue supporting clients during difficult transitions, demonstrating that true friendship knows no bounds.
Maria Bunce, Chief Officer of Age UK Isle of Wight, emphasized the collective impact of such volunteers on the community. "These awards are a wonderful thing to celebrate, and seeing Cheryl, Janet, and John recognised means so much to all of us. They give their time so freely and so consistently, and the difference they make to people's lives is real and lasting," she said.
