Heartwarming Reunion Celebrates NICU Success Stories
This past Saturday, families of children treated in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St. Charles Bend came together for an uplifting reunion event. The gathering served as a poignant celebration of shared experiences, progress, and the strong bonds formed during challenging times.
Connections Forged in Tough Times
The event brought together parents, children, nurses, doctors, and hospital staff, all united by the common hardships and joys associated with the NICU. Attendee Matt Skarzynski, reflecting on his experience with his daughter Angie, who was born prematurely, highlighted the significance of these gatherings. “Getting to be here and celebrate with other families who can understand what that experience is like is just really important to us,” he stated.
The Role of Nursing and Medical Staff
NICU Nurse Heather Bristol remarked on the inspiring moments that define her work, stating, “There’s so much hope and new life, no matter what that life weighs.” The reunion not only allowed families to celebrate their children's milestones but also provided individuals like Dr. Patrick Lewallen, the NICU Medical Director, the opportunity to witness firsthand the incredible growth of the babies they once cared for.
A Day of Fun and Reflection
The event featured activities for children, including a bounce house, face painting, and balloon artistry, creating a joyful atmosphere. Yet, amidst the laughter and celebration, there were reflective moments honoring NICU babies who did not survive. This duality of joy and remembrance underscores the profound impact of the NICU experience.
As families celebrated their children’s successes, Speranza—a NICU parent—emphasized the value of having such medical resources locally, praising the team's expertise and dedication. “Just how incredible of a resource it is that we have locally... hopefully nobody needs it. But if they do, they’re in very good hands,” she remarked.
