After a challenging hiatus, the Derbyshire Children's Holiday Centre has reopened its doors, thanks to the incredible support and generosity of the community. For the first time in two years, children have returned to enjoy seaside holidays, creating joyful memories at the cherished "Skeggy home."

For 135 years, the charity has provided holidays for disadvantaged youngsters, and its reopening signals a beacon of hope for many families. The centre had to pause its services in 2025 to regroup and reassess its operations. However, a remarkable fundraising campaign led by Derbyshire Live readers and various other fundraisers raised tens of thousands of pounds, paving the way for a sustainable future.

During the May Bank Holiday week, 17 children from two Derby schools were welcomed for a much-anticipated week at the coast. Chief Executive Janine Holmes expressed her delight at this milestone, noting, “Seeing the children’s excited faces as they joined us made it all worthwhile.” The heartfelt gratitude towards volunteers and supporters demonstrates the communal effort behind this uplifting initiative.

Schools have played a significant role in this process, with children being nominated to experience the holiday based on their circumstances. Springfield Primary head teacher David Blackwell affirmed the positive impact such breaks have on pupils' wellbeing, further emphasizing the joy that awaits children like triplets Poppy, Toby, and Mercy, as they embark on their seaside adventure.
