From War-Torn Roots to Architectural Dreams: Tuqa Kaabi's Inspiring Journey

In an inspiring tale of resilience and determination, Tuqa Kaabi, a Coventry student, is about to embark on her professional journey as an architect after overcoming a traumatic childhood marked by war and loss. Fleeing her home in Baghdad at just 11 years old, Tuqa's story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the pursuit of dreams, even in the face of formidable obstacles.

The Journey from Baghdad to Coventry

Tuqa escaped a life of conflict in Iraq, where the sounds of bombs and loss were a grim reality. Following the deaths of her father and sister, her mother made the brave decision to move the family to Lebanon in search of safety. However, challenges persisted, as Tuqa faced discrimination and instability in her new environment. In 2019, the family settled in Coventry, a city known for its welcoming ethos, providing Tuqa with a sense of belonging that had eluded her during years of displacement.

Nurtured by Community and Education

Arriving in Coventry, Tuqa quickly adapted, becoming her family's interpreter. Her passion for art and architecture blossomed during her time at Coventry College, leading her to study at Coventry University where she has consistently excelled. Tuqa credits her success to the supportive community that embraced her family, allowing her to explore her artistic talents while laying the groundwork for a promising career.

A Bright Future Ahead

This summer, Tuqa will begin her first professional role as a Design Assistant with West Midlands-based landscape architects. Reflecting on her journey, she notes that had she remained in Iraq, her life could have taken a vastly different path, likely limiting her aspirations. Instead, through hard work and perseverance, she is achieving her dream of becoming an architect, a significant milestone in her life that she has fought tirelessly to reach.

A Message of Hope and Determination

Tuqa’s story encapsulates a broader narrative of resilience among refugees and immigrants. Her experiences highlight the importance of community support, education, and the refusal to be defined by one's past. As she steps into her new role, Tuqa's journey serves as an inspiring reminder that with determination and the right environment, it is possible to overcome adversity and achieve one's dreams.
