Explore the Thrilling New Birding Route Transforming Southern Africa

A groundbreaking initiative has been unveiled, placing southern Africa in the spotlight of the global birdwatching scene. The newly announced Great Kavango Zambezi Birding Route is set to draw avitourists from around the world, showcasing an impressive collection of around 650 endemic and migratory bird species across a vast and diverse landscape.

Cross-Border Cooperation at Its Finest

This remarkable route stretches across five nations—Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, and Zimbabwe—boasting the world’s largest conservation area, which is comparable in size to Germany and France combined. By combining resources and habitats from these countries, the initiative exemplifies successful cross-border cooperation aimed at promoting conservation and ecotourism.

A Rich Avian Experience

Birdwatchers will have the unique opportunity to traverse various ecosystems, from arid deserts to lush forests and wetlands. The route follows ancient migratory paths along five major rivers: Zambezi, Chobe, Kwando, Kavango, and Kafue, creating an extraordinary experience for bird enthusiasts. As Dr. Nyambe Nyambe, Executive Director of the Kavango-Zambezi Secretariat, emphasizes, “No single country could offer what these five nations can achieve together.”

Success Stories Already Emerging

An international press expedition recently documented an impressive 215 bird species along the route, with 43 species identified for the first time, highlighting the area’s richness in biodiversity. This achievement signals the route’s credentials as a must-visit destination for serious birders and further solidifies its place on the global birding map.

Supporting Local Communities and Conservation

Numerous partners, including local chapters of BirdLife International and various conservation organizations, are actively involved in this initiative. They have initiated training programs for local guides and other support services to ensure that both visitors and the environment benefit from this endeavor. With 100 Birding Route Ambassadors already registered, there is a growing movement to promote sustainable birdwatching experiences under the KAZA Birding Route brand.

The Great Kavango Zambezi Birding Route not only highlights the beauty and diversity of southern Africa's avifauna but also presents significant opportunities for conservation and the local economy. Birdwatchers are encouraged to share this exciting news with fellow enthusiasts as preparations to experience this remarkable journey begin.
