Exciting Progress in Vernon's Housing Development: 93% of Yearly Target Achieved!
The City of Vernon is making remarkable strides towards addressing its housing challenges, having reached 93% of its first-year housing target within just six months. This initiative, mandated by the provincial government through the Housing Supply Act, aims to provide nearly 1,850 new housing units by 2030. The latest progress report reveals a positive trajectory for the city’s housing development plans.
Key Achievements in Housing Development
During the reporting period from September 2025 to February 2026, Vernon successfully issued occupancy for 270 housing units, with only 12 units demolished, culminating in a net gain of 258 new homes. This accomplishment is largely attributed to the completion of three multi-family development projects, which accounted for over half of the progress made so far. Among these is a rental apartment building that offers a variety of one- and two-bedroom units, aimed at increasing affordable housing options within the city.
Innovative Measures for Future Success
The city is continuing to develop innovative strategies to maintain and enhance this momentum. Recent initiatives include updating the Official Community Plan to encourage residential density and fostering collaboration within the homebuilding community. Additionally, the implementation of an interactive web map and a lot-identification tool promises to streamline the approval process for new housing developments.
Community Engagement and Outlook
Caitlyn Wiltsie, Vernon’s senior planner, emphasized the city's commitment to engaging local residents, realtors, and builders in the housing solution process. Council members also expressed optimism, highlighting the balanced mix of sizes and affordability in the new housing starts. However, some challenges loom ahead, particularly changes to provincial funding that could hinder future development efforts.
Despite the potential hurdles, this positive report from Vernon signals not only a step towards meeting housing demands but also a community dedicated to innovating and collaborating for better living conditions. As the city progresses through this five-year mandate, the approach and successes serve as a model for other municipalities facing similar housing concerns.
