Exciting Opportunities for Local Communities as Lower Thames Crossing Launches New Fund
In a significant move to bolster local initiatives, the Lower Thames Crossing has announced the launch of its new community fund, offering cash grants of up to £10,000. This initiative, aimed at supporting charities and community groups in Gravesham and Medway, will distribute nearly £2 million over the next seven years, marking a positive step forward for local development.
Supporting Local Causes
The fund is now open for applications, inviting various groups — including voluntary organizations, parish councils, and social enterprises — to apply. The criteria for applicants emphasize enhancing the quality of life for residents in the vicinity of the Lower Thames Crossing. Projects focused on improving mental health, boosting employment, fostering community connections, or enhancing the local environment will be prioritized.
Building Community Together
Shaun Pidcock, the programme delivery director for the Lower Thames Crossing, highlighted the project's dual nature, serving both as a critical economic infrastructure and a community supporter. He stated, "By supporting initiatives that are important to our communities... we intend to make a real positive difference.”
A Proven Track Record
The launch of this fund follows a successful pilot program in 2023, which allocated nearly £250,000 to over 50 projects. Examples of initiatives that benefited from the pilot include improvements to disabled access at Broomhill Woodland and new equipment for local scouting groups. One such group, the 11th Gravesend (St Mary’s) Scout Group, expressed gratitude for the grant that enabled them to expand their offerings to young people.
How to Apply
Applications for the Community Fund are now being accepted, with full criteria and guidance available through the fund's website. The management of applications will be conducted by the independent Kent Community Foundation, ensuring transparent and equitable award decisions made by a panel that includes representatives from local authorities and community members.
This new funding opportunity promises to lay the groundwork for an enriched community experience, addressing local needs and aspirations effectively as the Lower Thames Crossing project progresses.
