Exciting New Snorkeling Reef Set to Transform Panama City’s Coastal Experience
Panama City is set to enhance its shoreline with the introduction of the Love PC Snorkel Reef, an ambitious project aimed at creating an underwater attraction in St. Andrews Bay. This initiative not only aims to boost marine life but also to create a vibrant new spot for both residents and visitors.
A Heart for the Environment
The Love PC Snorkel Reef will consist of 50 artificial reef units strategically placed in the bay. Notably, ten of these units will be configured in a heart shape, symbolizing the project's mission to embody love for Panama City's coastal environment. Grant Reed, a special projects intern with Destination Panama City, highlighted that these reef units are essential for providing shelter to various fish and invertebrates, effectively enhancing local biodiversity.
Creating Habitats and Experiences
The reef structures, crafted from three concrete discs stacked on pilings underwater, are designed to mature over time. As they do, they will provide robust habitats for marine life, fostering an environment rich in biodiversity where fish and invertebrates can thrive. This innovative project aims not only to boost marine ecology but also to encourage recreational snorkeling among the community.
A Free Attraction for Everyone
What makes the Love PC Snorkel Reef particularly appealing is its accessibility. Located behind Destination Panama City, snorkelers will be able to access the reef directly from the shoreline without the need for a boat. Looking Ahead
Scheduled for completion by May 2027, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the Experimental Dive Unit at the Navy base, the project is seeking sponsors and donors to help bring this vision to life. With its potential to serve as a significant ecological and recreational resource, the Love PC Snorkel Reef promises not just to enhance the beauty of St. Andrews Bay but to create lasting bonds within the community.
