Exciting New Health Hub Promises Boost to Local Business in Plymouth
The recent announcement regarding the opening of a £25 million Community Diagnostics Centre (CDC) in Plymouth has sparked a wave of optimism among local business owners. Set to open on June 23, this state-of-the-art facility is poised to attract 300-350 daily appointments, greatly enhancing foot traffic in the city’s West End.
Business Leaders Express Hope for Increased Footfall
During a recent meeting with health leaders, several business owners shared their enthusiasm about the new CDC's potential impact on trade. Aurel Mani, owner of Coffee Time, highlighted how the extended operational hours of the health hub—open until 8 PM every day—could translate into more customers for local shops. "Increased footfall till 8 PM from the health centre will mean there will be potential customers around for longer," he stated, emphasizing the positive ripple effects the center could have on surrounding businesses.
Collaboration Between Health and Local Traders
Adam Fielder of AHF Workwear reflected on the broader struggles within retail, but expressed hope that the CDC would bring much-needed vitality to the area. The prospect of 700 patients and their families visiting each day creates opportunities for additional shopping and dining, fostering a lively atmosphere. "It means more people could browse around the market and eat later," he remarked, envisioning a vibrant community space.
A Welcoming Initiative for Sustainability
Ray Robins, chairman of the Plymouth Market Traders Association, praised the partnership between the NHS and local traders. He described the meeting as a "very, very positive" gathering where innovative ideas, such as pre-orders and deliveries, were discussed. This collaboration indicates a commitment to supporting local businesses while enhancing healthcare accessibility in the community.
The CDC is intended to alleviate pressure on the main hospital, improve service times, and facilitate earlier diagnoses, as noted by Nicki Collas from the Future Hospital Programme at UHP. Importantly, she highlighted how increased footfall from the health center could serve as a boost for local traders, promoting the sustainability of high streets and enhancing community life.
As the opening date approaches, the excitement in Plymouth is palpable, with business owners hopeful that the CDC will not only improve healthcare delivery but also invigorate the local economy. This initiative marks a promising step towards a more connected and thriving community.
