Exciting New Brewpub Welcomes Cheers in Witney

A newly opened brewpub in Witney is receiving warm support from the community following a much-anticipated launch after construction delays. Scarlet River Brewing Company, founded by former Tap Social head brewer Jason Bolger and his partner Niki Sibson, officially opened its doors last month, to the delight of many local patrons.

A Dream Realized

Scarlet River, located next to Marks & Spencer in the Marriotts Walk shopping center, had its original opening planned for January, but it wasn't until February that the lease was signed after delays in construction. Now, with the brewpub operational, it has quickly become a favorite, even being named the Oxford Mail Pub of the Week.

Craft Brews and Local Collaboration

This brewpub, featuring a seating capacity for up to 50 indoors and 30 outdoors, showcases a diverse selection of craft beers brewed on-site using a 500-litre kit behind the bar. Among its offerings are IPAs, lagers, and a unique “cask style” brew named Old Curmudgeon Bitter. Additionally, other local beverages like Purbeck Cider and a Scarlet River-branded gin are also available, further enriching the local community's craft beverage scene.

A Commitment to Community and Employment

Bolger expressed his excitement about the positive feedback, noting that the pub has seen full occupancy with around 60-65 patrons at times. He shared that Scarlet River aims to foster a welcoming environment for a diverse clientele, from youngsters to seasoned ale drinkers. Moreover, the couple is committed to bolstering the local economy by offering job opportunities, specifically aiming to recruit former Army and Air Force personnel to support their transition into civilian life.

Looking Forward

As the brewpub establishes itself, plans are in the works to introduce a food menu and eventually operate as an all-day café-bar. Bolger reflected on the historical significance of brewing in Witney and expressed a strong desire to continue that legacy, stating, “Niki and I are extremely excited to be bringing brewing back to Witney, as it does have a long history of breweries serving local communities.” With the unique name inspired by their children, Scarlet River is not just about making beer; it’s about enhancing the community spirit of Witney.
