Exciting Free Event to Inspire a Love of Reading in Hull!
A vibrant celebration of reading is set to take place at Hull’s East Park Library, where bestselling children’s authors Christopher Lloyd and Serena Patel will engage young minds with live readings on February 26. This unique event, designed to coincide with the upcoming World Book Day in March, aims to cultivate a passion for reading among children.
Encouraging Young Readers
The event offers an array of activities including workshops, games, and exciting £1 token and book exchanges, all geared towards inspiring children to see reading as a fun and enriching experience. Each child attending will have the opportunity to select a free book using their £1 token, ensuring that everyone walks away with a story to cherish.
World Book Day's Mission
With the alarming statistic that only one in three children now say they enjoy reading—marking the lowest level since 2005—initiatives like these are more crucial than ever. The World Book Day charity recognizes the importance of libraries in encouraging reading habits, particularly in disadvantaged areas. This year, World Book Day will also work with libraries to become community hubs that distribute books to children, aiming to combat low literacy rates.
The Power of Libraries
Fiona Hickley, executive director of World Book Day, emphasized the importance of libraries as welcoming spaces for children to explore stories and cultivate their love for reading. "Events like this brilliant one at East Park Library show children that reading can be exciting and something to look forward to," she stated, underscoring the role of libraries in transforming children’s relationships with books.
Voices of the Authors
Both authors, Christopher Lloyd and Serena Patel, expressed their excitement about participating in the event. Lloyd, co-author of Funny FACTopia!, shared his dedication to using non-fiction to inspire curiosity in young readers. Patel highlighted the significance of libraries in her own childhood, stating, "Books were a shining light, a window to the world.”
This event is not only about reading but also about fostering a community where children can discover the magic of stories and enjoy the life-changing benefits of literature. As we approach World Book Day, initiatives like these promise to ignite a newfound enthusiasm for reading among the next generation.
