Empowering the Next Generation: Women in Engineering Take Center Stage
In a significant move to bolster gender representation in the engineering and manufacturing sectors, a new campaign titled "I'm Included" has been launched by In-Comm, a training provider with centers in Aldridge and Telford. This initiative aims to encourage women to share their experiences and inspire the next generation of female role models in these traditionally male-dominated fields.
Highlighting Women’s Achievements in Engineering
As of now, women make up approximately 17% of the core engineering workforce. Bekki Phillips, the chief operating officer at In-Comm Training, emphasized the importance of redefining the narrative around women in these industries. The campaign seeks to demonstrate that women's participation in engineering is not just exceptional but should be viewed as the norm. By sharing compelling stories from female professionals, the initiative aims to motivate more young girls to explore careers in engineering.
A Unique Approach to Storytelling
The campaign features a focus group of ten female role models who have successfully navigated their careers in engineering. By discussing their individual journeys and challenges, these women aim to convey messages of resilience and possibility. The initiative will also utilize a launch video that follows a young girl's journey from initial inspiration in engineering through her education and eventual ascension into a leadership role. This storytelling approach intends to pave the way for other aspiring women in the sector.
Encouraging Broader Participation
In addition to the core campaign, participating companies and women are being encouraged to share their own stories via social media platforms, roundtables, and events. Claire Umney, the managing director of Birmingham-based Alwayse Engineering, underscored the necessity of amplifying female narratives in the industry. "We need to share more stories, and that's where I want everyone to promote their views and experiences - the more role models we create, the better," Umney remarked.
The "I'm Included" campaign not only showcases the experiences of women in engineering but also aims to inspire future generations to ensure that the industry continues to evolve towards inclusivity and representation. With collaborative efforts from various businesses, the initiative is poised to make a lasting impact and bring about much-needed change in the engineering landscape.
