Empowering the Next Generation: The Success of the Junior Good Citizen Initiative

The Junior Good Citizen (JGC) initiative has successfully equipped nearly 3,800 young individuals across Swindon and Wiltshire with crucial safety knowledge in preparation for their secondary school journey. This transformative program, which ran throughout June 2026, was conducted by Wiltshire Police’s Youth and Early Intervention Team, alongside local partners and neighbourhood policing teams. The initiative took place in venues across Swindon and Potterne, focusing on equipping children with necessary skills.

Comprehensive Safety Education

In Swindon alone, 2,259 children from 47 schools participated in interactive sessions that covered a range of essential topics including internet safety, healthy relationships, hate crime awareness, and mental health. The Wiltshire sessions, which involved 1,615 children from 59 schools, delved into subjects such as drugs and alcohol awareness, dog and road safety, anti-bullying measures, and personal safety advice. This well-rounded curriculum is aimed at fostering greater independence among students as they approach Year 7.

Community Trust and Engagement

Chief Inspector Steven Jolly highlighted the program's objective of empowering young people to make informed and safer choices while also knowing where to seek support. The active involvement of local policing teams not only assured the tailored implementation of sessions relevant to local issues but also fostered trust between police officers and the youth of the community.

Positive Impact and Future Prospects

The feedback from schools, parents, and students has been overwhelmingly positive, underlining the continuing success of the Junior Good Citizen initiative as it approaches its 40th anniversary. A local educator referred to the program as a powerful demonstration of community collaboration that instills values of confidence, kindness, and responsibility among young people in Wiltshire.

As we look to the future, the Junior Good Citizen initiative stands as a testament to what can be achieved when communities come together to support the young generation. By equipping children with vital knowledge and skills, we are not only enhancing their personal safety but also nurturing a sense of responsibility and community spirit that will carry forward as they navigate the challenges of adolescence.
