In a remarkable initiative, young trainees from the fishing hamlets of Ramanathapuram are not only learning water sports but also taking part in a movement that emphasizes environmental responsibility and community empowerment. Led by Jehan Hoshi Driver, known as JD, these children are gravitating towards ocean sports while simultaneously restoring the beauty of their coastlines.
The Journey Begins with Responsibility
Before stepping onto their paddleboards, these young enthusiasts take part in an essential lesson: cleaning the beach. JD believes that nurturing a sense of responsibility towards the environment is crucial for their development in water sports. This approach underscores a fundamental principle—protecting the sea must come before learning to harness its recreational potential.
Breaking Barriers in Water Sports
JD and his wife, Upasna, have dedicated their lives to making water sports accessible to local youth. Together, they are dismantling the stigma that water sports require expensive gear and professional coaching only available to the privileged. Their training programs focus not just on skill but also on building confidence among young girls, encouraging them to believe that they belong in the water. This empowerment is evident as 15-year-old Aarthi proudly holds the title of India's National Stand-Up Paddle Champion and inspires others, saying, “If I can do it, they can do it too.”
A Community United Through Sport
The impact of their efforts is apparent as several trainees have achieved remarkable feats, earning national medals and certifications as lifeguards and instructors. Notably, aspiring advocate Kantheswaram is training to become a PADI Divemaster, setting his sights on future marine conservation initiatives. Jehan highlights that Ramanathapuram is emerging as a key center for ocean sports in Tamil Nadu, indicating a burgeoning community of passionate coaches and athletes.
Building a Sustainable Future
To ensure the longevity of their mission, JD and Upasna established the Ocean Ambassadors Foundation. This initiative aims to empower coastal communities by creating pathways not just for athletes but for future leaders in marine conservation. As JD puts it, “When a child becomes a coach, a diver, a lifeguard, or someone who protects their own coastline, the whole community moves forward.”
As training sessions conclude, the camaraderie among the trainees becomes clear. Older students assist their younger counterparts, fostering a supportive environment that extends beyond sports. This experience represents more than a daily routine; it is a cohesive effort to uplift an entire community, intertwining sport with environmental stewardship and social progress.
