Discover Why Staycations are Winning Hearts in 2026!
As the trend of staycations continues to soar, new insights reveal an enthusiastic embrace of domestic travel among UK residents, especially younger travellers. According to the latest Staycation Index from Sykes Holiday Cottages, an impressive 38% of adults plan to spend their main holiday within the UK this year, with significant participation from Gen Z, who are increasingly seeking unique experiences closer to home.
The Rise of Domestic Travel
The survey highlights that 28% of adults are now more inclined to choose a UK holiday over international trips this year. This strong preference is reflected in the rankings of the most sought-after staycation destinations for 2026, with St Ives in Cornwall securing the top position, followed by Bamburgh in Northumberland and the picturesque Lake District.
Why UK Breaks are So Appealing
Coastal locations remain a favourite among holidaymakers, comprising six of the top ten destinations. Brighton has climbed to sixth place, while the charming towns of Salcombe and Bourton-on-the-Water have entered the top ranks, showcasing the diverse appeal of UK travel.
Interestingly, a growing number of travellers are opting for multi-stop trips, typically visiting around three locations during their breaks. This trend allows them to enjoy scenic views, unwind, and reconnect with loved ones, making their holidays both fulfilling and enjoyable.
What’s Driving Younger Travellers?
The continued popularity of UK breaks can be attributed to the emphasis on value, flexibility, and reassurance amid uncertainties surrounding international travel. As James Shaw, Chief Commercial Officer at Sykes Holiday Cottages, observes, Gen Z is now leading the charge, with 53% of this demographic planning UK holidays compared to 45% the previous year. Their preferences lean towards experience-led trips that combine culture, food, and scenic exploration.
A Wealth of Experiences Await
With such a wide range of options available, from seaside retreats to countryside escapes, the UK is well-equipped to cater to diverse tastes and preferences. The Sykes Holiday Cottages are offering a chance to win a £1,000 voucher, encouraging more people to immerse themselves in the unique experiences that domestic travel has to offer.
This year’s Staycation Index not only highlights the resilience of the UK tourism sector but also reflects a pivotal shift in how people perceive vacations. A wealth of beautiful destinations and experiences await those who choose to explore their own backyards.
