Discover the Unsung Heroes Transforming Our Communities!
In a heartwarming celebration of community spirit, the Highland Heroes 2026 community champion finalists have been announced, shining a light on individuals making significant impacts in their localities. These extraordinary finalists have dedicated their efforts to enhancing community services, supporting vulnerable families, and revitalizing neglected spaces.
Honoring Olivia Grant: A Beacon of Hope
Among the finalists is Olivia Grant, a 23-year-old graduate who has made a remarkable difference in the Stratherrick and Foyers area. Recognized for her work as the community services coordinator at Boleskine Community Care, Olivia is in the running for community champion of the year. Her initiatives have included leading the acquisition project for Foyers Village Stores, for which she successfully secured over £356,000 from the Scottish Land Fund. Olivia’s commitment extends beyond just economic support; she has expanded health clinics and designed the community’s first Community Larder, creating a welcoming hub for residents.
Kats Macleod: A Champion for Families
Another finalist, Kats Macleod, has been quietly transforming lives through her charity, Kats Second Editions, which she founded in 2020. By providing essential clothing and emergency items, her efforts have supported 705 children across 522 families last year alone. Simultaneously, Kats works at Tain Royal Academy, encouraging youth participation in community projects, which not only helps develop their skills but also fosters a spirit of cooperation and responsibility.
Revitalizing Spaces: Dave Genney's Vision
Dave Genney has been instrumental in breathing new life into Strathpeffer with his leadership in the £500,000 Strathpeffer Community Park project. Under his guidance, an overgrown area has been transformed into an accessible park designed for all ages, complete with playgrounds, picnic areas, and a community orchard. His dedication to community engagement has proven that collective vision and effort can reshape neglected spaces into thriving recreational areas.
Supported by High Life Highland, which sponsors the community champion award, the Highland Heroes initiative underscores the power of community and the importance of recognizing those who tirelessly work to improve lives. As Steve Walsh OBE, Chief Executive of High Life Highland, stated, “Every day, we hear inspiring stories of individuals who give their time and energy to improve the lives of others.” This award not only honors these community champions but also inspires others to engage and uplift their communities.
As we approach the final voting on March 1st, let us reflect on the remarkable impact of these heroes and consider how we can contribute to our own communities in meaningful ways.
