The vibrant festivities for the Lunar New Year are set to continue in Sunderland, promising an exciting lineup of events for all ages. With the Chinese New Year celebrations already captivating crowds in nearby Newcastle and Durham, the best is yet to come as Sunderland prepares to host its own grand party this Sunday, March 1, welcoming in the Year of the Horse.

A Dazzling Showcase of Tradition and Culture

This year's celebrations will feature an array of traditional activities, including lively dragon and lion dances, along with a unique K-Pop Demon Hunters tribute that is expected to be a crowd-pleaser. Families can look forward to a full day of fun, with the festivities scheduled from 11 am to 3 pm at Sunniside Gardens.

Engaging Activities for Everyone

In addition to the spectacular performances, attendees can explore various cultural displays such as classical and modern dance presentations, Chinese instruments, and a fashion show highlighting stunning traditional attire. A delightful selection of Asian food, arts, and crafts will be available, providing a taste of different cultures.

Participants can also engage in free craft sessions, including origami, calligraphy, mask-making, and even dragon puppet-making. This year marks the seventh anniversary of the Lunar New Year celebrations in Sunderland, with city officials expressing pride in the continuing growth and success of the event.

Roberta Redecke, head of business services at Sunderland’s BIDs, emphasized the city's welcoming nature and the joy derived from celebrating diverse cultures together. “A great deal of care and thought goes into ensuring there are activities for all ages,” she remarked. Ian Wong, owner of the Asiana restaurant, also shared his excitement about the event, highlighting the pleasure of seeing people from various backgrounds come together in celebration.

Supported by the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund, this year's Lunar New Year celebrations in Sunderland not only reflect the community's commitment to diversity but also offer a fantastic opportunity for its residents to engage with and learn from different cultures.
