Discover the Hidden Gems of UK Staycations: A Rise in Local Travel

The latest annual Staycation Index Report from Sykes Holiday Cottages reveals exciting trends in domestic travel, highlighting the UK as a top choice for holiday-goers. In a significant shift, an increasing number of Brits are opting to explore local destinations, with an impressive 28% of adults now more likely to take a holiday at home this year compared to previous years.

Top Staycation Destinations

This year's report showcases Cornwall’s St Ives as the most popular staycation destination in the UK, followed closely by Bamburgh in Northumberland. Other destinations on the rise include Bourton-on-the-Water and Salcombe, as more travelers seek vibrant coastal experiences and the charm of rural retreats. Brighton has also climbed the rankings, overtaking Lyme Regis as it captures the sixth spot.

The Influence of Younger Travelers

Particularly noteworthy is the growing interest from younger travelers, with 53% of Gen Z planning to spend their main holiday within the UK. This demographic is increasingly drawn to trips that prioritize experiences, offering a rich combination of scenery, food, and culture, while exploring multiple destinations during one trip. James Shaw, the Chief Commercial Officer at Sykes Holiday Cottages, emphasizes that the appeal of UK breaks lies in their value and flexibility, especially in the current climate of travel uncertainty.

Reasons Behind the Staycation Trend

According to the research, 78% of respondents are hoping for a UK break this year, driven by a deep appreciation for the country’s natural beauty and a desire to relax. Seaside locations topped the list of desired holiday spots, chosen by 65% of respondents, followed by rural areas and national parks. Familiar tourist attractions and locations rich in personal memories also play a significant role in travel decisions.

This inclination for staycations not only supports local tourism but also allows travelers to reconnect with their surroundings. With the steady rise in popularity, the UK is showcasing its diverse range of destinations, making it a perfect subject for both exploration and relaxation.
