Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre Reopens Its Doors to Smiles and Joy
After a challenging hiatus, the Derbyshire Children's Holiday Centre has successfully reopened, providing seaside holidays to disadvantaged children for the first time in two years. This remarkable comeback, made possible by the tireless efforts of fundraisers and the generosity of Derbyshire Live readers, signals a new chapter for a charity that has been enriching the lives of youngsters for 135 years.
A Celebration of Community Support
In 2025, the centre in Skegness faced the difficult decision to pause its holiday program. This period allowed the organization time to regroup and plan for the future. However, through extensive fundraising efforts, including contributions from the local community, the charity was able to raise tens of thousands of pounds to revive its essential services. Chief Executive Janine Holmes expressed her gratitude, noting how heartwarming it was to see children excited to attend the holiday programme once again.
Creating Lasting Memories
The holiday centre welcomed 17 children during the May Bank Holiday week, offering them a refreshing break by the sea. Schools from Derby nominated children who would benefit the most from this opportunity. Springfield Primary's head teacher, David Blackwell, emphasized the positive impacts such experiences have on children's well-being and enjoyment. The parents of these children also shared their excitement, with one mother recalling her son’s joyful memories from previous visits to the centre.
The Heart of the Charity's Mission
The Derbyshire Children's Holiday Centre aims to create unforgettable experiences for children who might not otherwise have an opportunity for a holiday. Volunteer support has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life, ensuring that the children enjoy a fulfilling and fun-filled week. As the charity continues its mission, the smiles and laughter of the children reaffirm the value of community spirit and support.
