Community Unites to Support Cancer Care Through Fundraising Event
A recent coffee morning at the Dolmen Centre in Aughnacliffe marked a successful fundraising effort for Multyfarnham’s Lakelands Area Retreat and Cancer Centre (LARCC), drawing a strong crowd of supporters. The event, organized by Edna Smith from Rath Mhuire and Dolmen Community Services, was inspired by the personal journey of her colleague Susan Freeman, who received significant support from LARCC during her battle with breast cancer.
Empowering Cancer Survivors
Susan Freeman shared her profound experience with LARCC, recounting her diagnosis and the subsequent care she received. After undergoing a mastectomy, she was referred to LARCC, where she received not only prosthetic support but also emotional and practical assistance in a warm and welcoming environment. “I can't praise the centre enough,” Susan expressed, highlighting how the caring atmosphere at LARCC stood in stark contrast to the often clinical nature of medical settings.
A Call for Awareness and Support
With the fundraiser successfully raising essential funds, it also served to raise awareness about the importance of early detection and the valuable services provided by LARCC. Joan Cassidy, chairwoman of the Failte Ladies Club, emphasized the necessity of supporting organizations like LARCC that offer respite and assistance to those dealing with cancer. “Anything that gives respite to people that are going through cancer is worth supporting,” she remarked, reinforcing the community’s commitment to providing care and support to individuals in need.
This event not only reflects the unity and compassion of the local community but also highlights the significant impact that support services can have on the lives of cancer patients and their families. It’s a reminder of the vital role that community initiatives play in fostering hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
