Community Spirit Shines at Weston Super Mare SCCC Evening
Recently, the members committee of the Weston Super Mare SCCC Area hosted a delightful social evening at the Red Cow in Brent Knoll. This gathering, attended by over 40 cricket enthusiasts, provided a warm opportunity for fans to connect and share their love for the sport during the chilly winter months.
A Star-Studded Guest List
The evening featured prominent figures from Somerset cricket, including current team captains Sophie Luff and Lewis Gregory. Their presence not only added star power to the event but also inspired attendees with their insights and experiences in the game. Additionally, former Somerset captain Brian Rose, remembered for leading the team during a golden era known as the Glory Years, joined as a special guest.
A Fundraising Success
The event included a draw and auction, with proceeds directed toward Lewis Gregory's upcoming testimonial in 2026. This aspect highlights the community's commitment to supporting its players and making arrangements for their future recognition and appreciation in the sport.
Investing in the Future of Cricket
One of the most uplifting moments of the evening was the presentation of cricket kits to the youth teams of Lympsham & Belvedere CC. The kits, funded by the old Weston Area Committee and supplied by Somerset County Sports, demonstrate a collective investment in nurturing the next generation of cricketers.
Stephen Southwell, who organized the event on behalf of the members committee, expressed satisfaction at the successful turnout. He noted, “The evening was a great success, and it was good to catch up and talk about Somerset cricket and the new season, which isn’t too far away now." This sentiment encapsulates the spirit of togetherness and optimism that defines the vibrant cricket community in Somerset.
