Community Spirit Shines as St. Charles Health System Distributes $240,000 in Grants
In a remarkable display of community support, St. Charles Health System recently awarded over $240,000 in Community Benefit grants to 45 local organizations across Central Oregon. This generous funding aims to address crucial community needs, particularly focusing on enhancing access to healthy food and combating feelings of loneliness within the region.
Significant Increase in Community Support Requests
The initiative, part of St. Charles' commitment to serve the community, received a record number of applications this year, with more than 90 organizations vying for support. According to Carlos Salcedo, manager of Community Partnerships with St. Charles Health System, the demand for assistance has significantly increased, indicating a growing need for community resources. "We are proud to provide support for many wonderful efforts and events in Central Oregon," Salcedo stated, underscoring the importance of these grants in fostering community resilience.
Highlighting Local Heroes: Open Door Ministries
One of the notable grant recipients, Open Door Ministries, received a $5,000 Basic Needs grant. This organization, associated with the Bend Methodist Church, plays a vital role in supporting individuals facing poverty and homelessness. It provides essential services, including clothing, hygiene items, food, and financial assistance for utilities.
Chuck Hemingway, a representative from Open Door Ministries, expressed gratitude for the grant, stating, "Our roots are in helping marginalized people. It's who we are. We are thrilled to receive this grant. We will be good stewards of the funding and will put it to good use." This sentiment reflects the organization’s deep commitment to serving those in need.
Long-Term Commitment to Community Welfare
The initiative not only helps meet immediate needs but also fosters a long-term sense of belonging and community connection. Volunteers like Charlotte Hartman, who has dedicated nearly 40 years to assisting at Open Door Ministries, exemplify the spirit of service in Central Oregon. "I've worked here almost 40 years. I do it because you just look around and see the need. It's huge. It makes me feel good and hopefully it touches someone's life in a positive way," Hartman remarked, highlighting the profound impact of volunteerism on local lives.
St. Charles Health System, the largest employer in Central Oregon with over 5,600 caregivers, continues to stand as a pillar of support for the community, collaborating with local partners to deliver diverse health services. As the community navigates increasing challenges, such initiatives bring hope and reinforce the collective responsibility to uplift those in need.
