Children's Holiday Centre Reopens After Fundraising Success: A Beacon of Hope
In a heartwarming turn of events, the Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre has reopened its doors for the first time in two years, thanks to the dedication and generosity of the local community. The centre, which has provided seaside breaks for disadvantaged children for over 135 years, was forced to pause its operations in 2025 but has now welcomed children back to create new joyful memories.
A Long-Awaited Return
This May Bank Holiday week marks a significant milestone as 17 children embark on a free seaside holiday. Chief Executive Janine Holmes expressed her delight at the reopening, stating, “It has been a long time coming but I was overjoyed to be opening up the much-loved ‘Skeggy home’ once again.” After a substantial fundraising effort, the charity has found a sustainable way moving forward, providing essential breaks for children who may otherwise miss out on such opportunities.
Community Support Shines Bright
The reopening of the holiday centre is a result of extensive community support, with contributions from Derbyshire Live readers and other fundraising initiatives, including the Cosy Bike & Hike event. Trustee and volunteer efforts have played a crucial role in getting the charity back on its feet. Holmes added, “Seeing the children’s excited faces made it all worthwhile.”
An Impactful Experience for Young Lives
Children are nominated for these breaks by their schools based on their need for a cheerful getaway. Springfield Primary's head teacher, David Blackwell, highlighted the positive impact of such experiences on children’s well-being and enjoyment. The community's support also included children from the schools who actively participated in fundraising to help sustain the charity during difficult times.
Excitement for New Adventures
Among the attendees this week are triplets Poppy, Toby, and Mercy, all expressing their excitement for a week spent by the sea. Their mother shared her enthusiasm, reminiscing about the positive experiences her own son had at the Skeggy home. Such stories of joy and community spirit embody the essence of the Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre’s mission: to bring smiles and hope to those who need it most.
