Changing the Narrative: The Uplifting Stories of Africa

The perception of Africa has long been dominated by negative portrayals, yet a significant shift is underway. As Moky Makura, Executive Director of Africa No Filter, points out, there is a growing movement dedicated to changing how the continent is represented globally. This transformation is not only important for how others view Africa but also crucial for how Africans perceive their own futures.

A New Perspective on Africa

In her remarks at the Trialogue Business in Society Conference, Makura highlighted a startling statistic: 70% of stories about Africa in major international media outlets focus on politics, poverty, and crises, with a mere 10% capturing the continent's innovations, culture, and positive developments. This skewed narrative diminishes the agency of Africans to shape their own future.

Visibility of Positive Stories

Fortunately, the narrative is beginning to shift, as more storytellers, journalists, and creatives across the continent strive to highlight a more balanced view of Africa. They are not short of positive stories; rather, the challenge lies in ensuring these stories are visible. To combat this, Africa No Filter has launched the Opportunity Africa movement, which aims to connect efforts that promote empowering narratives about the continent.

The Role of Collective Effort

Makura emphasizes that everyone has a role to play in this narrative transformation. Individuals, civil society, investors, and businesses must come together to amplify African voices and share stories that emphasize potential and possibilities. By shifting from a deficit-based view to one that frames Africa as a land of opportunities, the perception will gradually change.

Narrative is not merely a soft issue; it has structural implications that impact capital, policy, and belief systems. As the movement grows, it aims not to ignore the challenges Africa faces but to balance these with the solutions, innovations, and talents thriving across the continent. This redefinition of Africa’s image could pave the way for greater investment, opportunity, and mobility, ultimately benefitting not just the continent but the world.
