Celebrating Unsung Heroes: The Inspiring Journey of Joanne Harris
The annual Pride of Britain Awards shines a spotlight on ordinary individuals who perform extraordinary acts of kindness and bravery. This year, the spotlight is on Joanne Harris from Co Down, who won the Fundraiser of the Year award in 2025 for her remarkable charity work. As nominations for the 2026 awards open, the stories of these unsung heroes inspire us all.
The Impact of Knitted Knockers
Joanne Harris, the founder of Knitted Knockers of Northern Ireland, has made a tremendous impact on women recovering from mastectomy surgery. Inspired by a friend’s battle with breast cancer, Joanne initiated a movement to provide free, hand-knitted breast prosthetics. The lightweight, 100% cotton prosthetics offer comfort and a practical alternative to traditional silicone options, transforming the lives of many women in her community.
A Growing Network of Support
Under Joanne’s leadership, Knitted Knockers has expanded from a small group of knitters into a network of over 74 volunteers. Together, they produce around 5,000 breast prosthetics each year, significantly easing the emotional and physical burdens faced by cancer patients. Additionally, the charity provides a variety of supportive resources including post-surgery comfort kits and waterproof "swimming knockers," enhancing the overall recovery experience for women.
Promoting Mental Well-Being
In 2017, Joanne took her vision a step further by establishing “The Clubhouse,” a mental health and well-being initiative that fosters community and creativity among breast cancer survivors. Plans for a second venue reflect her commitment to supporting those affected by cancer, showcasing that her work goes beyond physical support to encompass emotional healing.
A Call for Recognition
The Pride of Britain Awards highlight not just the accomplishments of individuals like Joanne, but also beckon the nation to recognize and celebrate the vast array of unsung heroes who contribute to society. As Chloe Hubbard, editor-in-chief of the Daily Mirror, puts it, “Every nominee is deserving of recognition.” The event serves as a reminder of the collective impact these individuals have in fostering hope and unity during challenging times.
As nominations for the next edition of the Pride of Britain Awards begin, we are encouraged to share and celebrate extraordinary stories from every corner of the UK. With co-hosts Carol Vorderman and Ashley Banjo, the awards promise to be a heartfelt occasion, highlighting acts of courage and kindness that inspire us all to make a difference.
