Celebrating Triumph: NICU Families Reunite for Heartwarming Gathering

This past Saturday, families with children who were treated in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St. Charles Bend came together for a reunion event filled with joy and reflection. The occasion marked a significant milestone for parents, their children, nurses, doctors, and hospital staff, as they celebrated the incredible journeys of survival and recovery of the young patients.

A Special Bond Among Families

The reunion offered a unique opportunity for families to connect over shared experiences, fostering a sense of community that many found essential. Matt Skarzynski, father of NICU graduate Angie, expressed the importance of this gathering, stating, "Getting to be here and celebrate with other families who can understand what that experience is like is just really important to us."

Reflecting on Challenges and Progress

Skarzynski and Angie’s mother, Angel Speranza, recalled the harrowing challenges they faced when their daughter, born at just 27 weeks and weighing only one pound and nine ounces, was whisked away after birth. Speranza shared, "When I was in the O.R. and they whisked her away and we didn't know if she was alive or not. It was really hard." Yet, Angie's almost four-month journey in the NICU was filled with support and care from the dedicated medical staff.

A Source of Hope and Joy

NICU Nurse Heather Bristol reflected on her role, emphasizing the hope that fills the unit despite the challenges. Bristol noted, "There's so much hope and new life, no matter what that life weighs." Dr. Patrick Lewallen, the NICU Medical Director, echoed this sentiment, expressing joy in observing the thriving children at the reunion. "It's super impactful because they start out often like this. And to see them running around and playing and parents saying they're doing great, it's just the best news in the world," he said.

Activities and Remembrance

The reunion was not only about celebration but also included activities for children such as a bounce house, face painting, and balloon artists. There were also displays of incubators and other medical equipment used in the NICU, allowing families to reflect on their journeys. A table was set up to honor NICU babies who did not survive, adding a poignant moment to the day's festivities.

Speranza highlighted the invaluable resource the NICU represents for the local community, stating, "Just how incredible of a resource it is that we have locally and how experienced the team is." The reunion stands as a testament to the strength of families, the dedication of medical staff, and the hope that continues to flourish in the faces of these brave children.
