Celebrating Leadership and Inclusivity: Abbey School's Triumph at the Youth Sport Trust Awards

In a remarkable display of dedication to empowering young leaders, Abbey School has been honored with the prestigious Empowering Young Leaders Award at the 2026 Youth Sport Trust Awards. The event, held at the Telford International Centre, recognized the school’s commitment to fostering leadership skills among its 220 pupils aged 6-19 who face moderate learning difficulties.

A New Approach to Leadership

Abbey School's innovative "Lion Leader" initiative engages every student in leadership roles, which encompass organizing breakfast, checking equipment, and leading physical education (PE) or sensory circuit activities. This hands-on approach not only builds confidence but also encourages teamwork and responsibility among students. The school further promotes inclusivity through sports events where pupils take charge, allowing them to learn valuable life skills while focusing on collaboration and experience.

Voices of Pride and Purpose

Assistant headteacher Jill Newbolt expressed pride in the school's recognition, emphasizing that it reflects the institution's core values. “It gives us the drive to do it, and our head [Lucy Windle] really respects the YST, so she allows us to go with anything,” Newbolt noted, highlighting the significant impact on students' lives. The PE teacher, Katie Crowley, echoed these sentiments, stating the importance of national recognition for the children, their progression, and their sporting achievements.

A Night of Celebration and Inspiration

The awards ceremony was not only about recognizing Abbey School; it also celebrated the broader impact sports can have on children's health and wellbeing. Various key figures from the sporting community attended the event, including former England women's rugby captain Sarah Hunter and Olympic gold medallist Darren Campbell. Host Radzi Chinyanganya led discussions that emphasized the transformative power of sport and play in fostering positive change in educational environments.

Looking to the Future

Darren Campbell remarked on the significance of recognizing those committed to inspiring young people. He reminded attendees that believing in someone can make a profound difference in their lives. The Youth Sport Trust Annual Conference Awards underscore the need for continued support and celebration of schools, trusts, and individuals who are dedicated to creating brighter futures for children through sport and play.

As Abbey School exemplifies, a supportive environment can unlock tremendous potential in every child, reinforcing the essential role of educational institutions in shaping the leaders of tomorrow.
