Celebrating Inspiring Women: North East Shines a Light on Gender Equality

This year, as we observe International Women's Day, the North East is proudly showcasing 100 inspiring women whose contributions are making a significant impact on the community. The initiative, which has gained momentum over the past three years, aligns with the 2026 theme of "Give To Gain," highlighting the importance of collective efforts towards achieving gender equality.

A Diverse List of Trailblazers

The list recognizes a varied array of women from sectors including politics, sports, culture, and charity, emphasizing the strides made by women in leadership roles—a crucial aspect for the advancement of society. Notably, several women are being acknowledged for their achievements for the first time, including North Tyneside Mayor Karen Clark and community campaigners Alison Madgin, Carly Barrett, and Michala Trussler.

Progress in Traditionally Male-Dominated Fields

One of the notable trends in this year’s list is the increasing representation of women in jobs traditionally dominated by men, such as police chiefs and senior engineering positions. This shift not only signals progress but also empowers future generations to aspire towards leadership roles, irrespective of gender. The recognition of these women serves as a reminder that advancing gender equality requires deliberate contributions from all sectors of society.

The selection of inspiring women by the committee is a testament to the diverse talents present in the North East, offering encouragement and hope to others to partake in the ongoing fight for equality. As we celebrate these accomplished individuals, we are reminded of the vital role they play in shaping a brighter future for all.
