Celebrating a Milestone: The Launch of the Black Health Researchers' Hub
On February 24, 2026, the Collaborative Health Education Building buzzed with excitement as the new Black Health Researchers' Hub (BHRH) was officially unveiled. This significant event was marked by traditional drumming, a libation to honor ancestors, and a series of inspiring speeches from leaders in the health faculties.
A Collaborative Space for Black Health Research
The establishment of the BHRH is a landmark achievement for Dalhousie University, representing a commitment to creating culturally safe environments for research focused on Black health issues. Co-led by Drs. OmniSoore Dryden and Barbara Hamilton-Hinch, this hub aims to facilitate collaboration among researchers addressing unique health challenges faced by Black communities.
An Emphasis on Oral Health Disparities
During the opening, Dr. Ben Davis, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, emphasized the critical connection between oral health and overall health. He articulated the hub's potential to tackle oral health disparities affecting African Nova Scotians, notably access to healthcare. Dr. Davis declared, "This is good news for the health professions at Dalhousie, it is good news for Black health researchers, and it is great news for our Black community members."
This event not only celebrates a new facility but also symbolizes a broader commitment to equity and inclusiveness in health research. The BHRH stands as a beacon of hope and progress, promising to address significant health disparities and foster a supportive community for researchers dedicated to improving Black health outcomes.
