Celebrate the Spirit of Community: Highlights from the West Devon Mayoral Awards
In a heartwarming ceremony that served as a testament to community spirit, West Devon's Mayoral Awards brought to light the selfless contributions of local heroes, volunteers, and organizations. The event, held earlier this year, highlighted the outstanding dedication and compassion within the community that continues to make a lasting difference across the borough.
Acknowledging Local Heroes
The Mayor of West Devon, Paul Vachon, emphasized the importance of recognizing those who often work behind the scenes. "In West Devon, we are blessed with having so many people and groups with foresight, empathy, and dedication to help and support our communities," he remarked. "These awards are our way of saying thank you. Your contributions to our communities are an inspiration to us all."
Outstanding Youth Achievement
Among the award recipients was Barnaby Ryder, a remarkable young individual who won the Under 18s award after completing a solo swim across the English Channel. Covering an impressive 21 miles, Barnaby raised over £5,000 for the ManUp? Charity, which focuses on men’s mental health awareness. His accomplishment not only highlights personal bravery but also sheds light on important social issues.
Community Organizations Making Strides
Various community organizations also received recognition for their exceptional service. The Drewe Arms Community Pub Committee was honored for its efforts in saving the historic Drewe Arms, turning it back into a vital hub of community life in Drewsteignton. Additionally, Tavistock Library was celebrated for its role in fostering community engagement through its vibrant services.
Environmental Contributions and Long Service
Environmental efforts received accolades with the presentation of the Mayor’s Green Award to Pam Pemberton for establishing the only hedgehog rescue sanctuary in West Devon. This initiative not only provides care for sick and injured hedgehogs but also inspires community involvement in wildlife conservation. Furthermore, the Long Service Award was given to Edwina Hill and Robin Hill for their decades of support to village life in Belstone and local charities.
The Mayoral Awards serve as a reminder of the profound impact volunteers and community champions have on society. Their stories of compassion and dedication inspire all of us to contribute positively to our local communities.
